How to Properly Store Onions

We haven't always stored our onions correctly. It's easy to forget about them when they're drying out and curing. Keeping your onions in a dark, cool environment helps to dry them out quickly, while also preserving the onion nicely. If the environment is too hot or muggy, it tends to be a breeding ground for decay and black mold to grow. Learn from our mistakes! :)

This year, we opted to hang our onions on a string. The string I chose was simply a rope-like yarn that was sturdy enough to withhold the weight of the onions without stretching.

Start by cutting a length of string measuring 3 feet. Next, tie the two ends together with a slip knot so you end up with a big loop. Pull down at the bottom of the loop to ensure the knot is tight enough that it will stay tied. Hang the loop on a nail or hook near where you'll be hanging the onions.

Now, cut all but two inches off of the tops of the dried onions. If they don't have at least that long of a top, they will not be able to hold onto the string. Take one of your largest onions and weave the top through the middle of the loop, and then wrap it around one side of the string. Pull it back through the middle of the loop and down to secure. The onion should stay in place. Continue to do that with each onion until you have your finished product!
